Sec 1 Maths Performance Task Reflection

(I) Role of Statistics in Real Life
Statistics is a way to express data together, for easy comparing to come to conclusions. From the presentation, there is some way to predict the future. As there are ways to group the different components, it is actually another alternative method to summarise information.
There are many different forms of statistics like pie chart, dot diagram, stem and leaf diagram, bar graph, histogram, pictogram and line graph. There are similarities among all the types os statistics. For example, they need to have graphs titles, labels and sometimes there is a key or legend given. The differences among them is that the format of representation. The numbers maybe at the side of the vertical or/and below the horizontal axis or using pictures to represent a certain number or using dots to plot data or separating the the ones and tens digit from each other and arranging the ones digit in ascending order.
In histograms, on the vertical or "y" axis, the frequency word must be written there. Usually before doing  a histogram, a frequency table is drawn out to tally the results and finally calculating the total of it. As for bar graphs, the bars are equally spaced and there is a vertical and horizontal axis just like line graphs.
Statistics can be used in many cases. In the work force, statistics are used to monitor the stock markets. Statistics is a common way of reviewing the annual performance and progress of the company and from that be able to judge whether there is an improvement. Singapore government uses statistics to group all the data given and plot them and sometimes this is the way they compare the income of Singaporeans.  Companies chart all the information is graphs as it is a neat, easy, organised way to show information together. Singapore Power may share such information to inform them of their usage through percentage and encourage them to conserve more energy.
An example to calculate the marks is to draw a histogram to show the results of students performance for a particular subject, like Mathematics. Other than that, when there are major examinations going on like PSLE or "O" levels, statistics help to tell the mean, median and modal of the set of the students results.
Statistics helped me personally with data organisation as sometimes there are Science experiments to be done and with the data they need to be plotted using statistics. I feel that line graphs are the easiest as they can link the information together when the data are related. Personally, I love graphs as numbers are related to each other most of the time. Hence, graphs shows their comparisons on a common term which can be shown as frequency or on the vertical or horizontal axis.
In the newspapers, statistic is most commonly used to show the average, mean and median income of Singaporeans. Sometimes, they add on by showing the increasing trend of the income gap.
Secondly, they also use graphs to show the population of Singapore and can conclude that the population is growing and at the same time aging. It is only possible for the population to thrive as old people live longer as compared to the past. From the data plotted, it is also ablt to infer that in the future, 1 in 5 Singaporeans would be an elderly person.
Lastly, graphs in Singapore are widely used to show the rapidly increasing prices of housing in Singapore with an impact from inflation. Reporters would compare the average prices of housing in 2005 with 2010 to show the drastic difference. From the results, it is possible to conclude that prices of housing have increased too much at once, affecting the citizens.
There are many different ways and perspective to look at statistic. My take in this is that it a form of platform to interlink data together for easy comparisons. As the most common types of statistic is to use the mean of something versus the mean of something else, it is not that accurate. If the numbers used to find the mean are not "nice", the mean might just end up being a decimal or fraction which may reduce the accuracy of it. And if the two means are very close, every bit of difference counts in to see which wins. Although there are exceptions to statistics like what was mention above, statistic is quite accurate most of the time to compare data.

(II) Learning Experience
My group had little time to complete this project and every minute counts. Hence, we split up the job and every member did around the same amount by plotting the information and doing each part of the poster. I think my group is very organised and patient with each other. As this is an all-girls team, we knew how to priortise our things and do the more important and urgent things first. We did not push our responsibility to another member and diligently did what we were supposed to do. My role in this project is to be the Leader. As the leader, I felt that great power comes with great responsibilities which meant that I was given all the power to control but at the same time a greater range of consequences to face if the project outcome is not up to standard. For the part on challenges, as we had only around 3 days to do it, I had some difficulty splitting up the jobs and parts to each team member. After each member finishes their part, another challenge would be to put them together and present an outstanding poster. I think I would stay back and do together with my team mates as it needs to be submitted in one whole and it is quite hard to put things together. Hence by doing that way, it would definitely be more convenient for everyone in the group. Another thing which I would need is more time to get together and complete the whole project. This would be a great lesson to teach me how to manage my time well and how to improve for the better in the future when I encounter with projects again.

Chap 2: Real Numbers - Rational Numbers

As shown, the table shows that 3/6 and 6/6 are not equal to recurring decimals but terminate at a decimal of 0.5 and 1 as 6/6 is actually 1 and 3/6=1/2 which is equals to 0.5.As for the others fractions, they are recurring decimals as their digits do not end there but continue on which would never terminate.

Reflection For Orientation Camp

1. What were 3 of the highlights of the Orientation and the last 2 weeks?
3 highlights of the is the campfire and the tower building activity and last but not least high elements.  It definitely were memorable moments.

2. What were 3 of the "low" moments of Orientation and the last 2 weeks
First day of camp and first 2 days of school.  During these periods, there were not many activities going on so, these periods were quite boring and "low".

3. What are 3 of my greatest takeways/lessons from the Orientation and the last 2 weeks?
I think 3 lessons are all to be learnt in Orientation Camp as they teach us to be grateful for what we have and the transitions from Primary school to Secondary school.  Lastly, I learn to

4. What did you learn about yourself in the last 2 weeks?
I learn to be more confident, speak up in class and to open up to accept more views.  Other than that, I also learn to have teamwork.

5. What are you looking forward in 2011?
I look forward to do well in my studies and to get to know my new friends better.

Communication

1.Why is communication important?
Communication is important as if there is no communication, there will be no form to convey a message across to another person to tell my personal views on a situation.Communication allows us to say things right from our mouths so that the third party will not interpret it wrongly and say the wrong information.

2.What is/are your favourite forms of communication?Why?
Of course, like others most common forms of communication, talking, chatting, blogging!!!First and for most,on the top of my list is talking.Talking allows me to say things right from my mouth, giving me options to tune my tone to the correct tone to match what I am saying.Chatting is another convenient way to communicate as at home it is impossible to communicate with friends unless through the phone. One way is to switch on the computer or iphone and start chatting with friends.Unlike telephone,on a socializing site I can chat for as long as I want.Blogging is also not too bad a site to use as whatever I post on it,it will stay there unlike talking and chatting. However, other people can still post their comments and give suggestions to improve my blog.

3.How do you decide which form of communication to use in a situation?
To decide which form of communication to use,it depends on what the other person on the listening end's plight is.If the person is sad,the best form of communication is talking as the tone of my speech matters a lot.In communication, the words I use matters a lot as different words carry different meanings.

4.What difficulties do u face in communicating with others?
In communication, one of the most common mistakes, misinterpreting the meaning of my speech/saying the wrong thing or the other person does not understand what I say.Hence thats why in communicating, I must be very clear what I want  to convey to the other person and what words I am going to use

Reflection For Orientation Camp

Overall, in this camp I have learnt a lot about myself and my classmates. For the first day of the camp, everyone was so cold to each other that there was no energy in everyone.  To get to know each other better, the PSLs helped to facilitate ice breakers and through the hard work of theirs, slowly but steadily, one by one,we started to open up although we were all new to each other.

On the second day of camp, we had another different game of ice breakers.  As much as my classmates looked forward too so did I, the Challenging Rope Course.  That was the main attraction for the day as it consisted of different types of challenges like the rolling log.  Although it took time for each of us to finish, we cheered one another on.

On the last day of the camp, we played cat and mouse before cleaning up the place and doing the procedures of the closing ceremony.

This camp made me feel happy yet sleepy that I had achieved something out of this camp.

Day 2:End-of-Day Reflection

Day 2:End-of-Day Reflection

What have you done today?
Today,I formed groups with my classmates and competed with other groups of my classmates in tower building. The best tower in each class was being used to compete the best towers of other classes.Today,I also had a mac attack 2 session which requires us to make use of keynote and pages to plan my storyboard. And finally, now I have to do the reflection as the final thing of the day.

How have your grown from today's activities?
I have grown to become more out-going and be able to mix around. Also,I am now able to do groupwork with ease as everybody will work together and corporate to complete the assignment.

How should you behave when doing groupwork?
I should carry a serious attitude when doing homework as it shows to my teachers how my attitude is and it truly shows what personality I have.

Why are there differences of opinions?
The different opinions will allow me to know different views of an situation or object to broadthen my knowledge and views of that topic. They can also point out my mistakes and add on to the number of reason.

Why are you happy to be a member of your class?
I am happy to be in this class as I can always voice out my views of an topic and speak up.I can also be able to do group work with my classmates and share all our views.

Day 2:Towering Building

Day 1 Mac Attack 1 - Activity 4:End-of-Day Reflection

What have you done today?
I did ice breakers to bond with my classmates and get to know them better.I also did activities related to the macbook to get to know how to use it.

What have you learnt today?
I had learnt  some personal likings of my classmates and get hands-on with the macbook.

Why did you choose to come to SST?
SST  allows me to develop my interest in Science although Mathematics is my best subject. It also provides me with a different way of learning that will help me to learn more efficiently.

What are your aspirations as a member of the SST family?
I hope to be able to develop my talents and areas of interest with the best learning environment.I also hope to be able to be able to improve my subjects.
